Bill Stolpin's Front Page

Located in Holly Michigan, (about twenty minutes south of Flint Michigan), Bill comes from a talented family. His father was an engineer and sculptor while his mother was a stockbroker, a pianist and composer, and his brother is a retired journeyman model maker and an inventor with several patents in his name. An eagle scout and a retired engineer himself, Bill used to play the flute, has done everything in Community Theater including directing, and has studied lithography (with Emil Weddige), woodcut (with Akira Kurosaki) and etching (at Crown Point Press). He currently teaches printmaking at the Flint Institute of Arts in Flint.

Bill Stolpin has been making prints since he was a kid. In junior high school, he was making linoleum block Christmas cards. The year he made a card with 7 blocks, and fifteen colors, he decided to take advantage of his printmaking skills.

In addition to his own prints, Bill began printing with the late James Anthony in 1980. Quickly joined by Stefan Davidek and Carole Brender, the four printmakers soon became known as DAS PRINT Co. As a well known group in the Flint area, they have printed together ever since. They have had group shows throughout mid-Michigan, and recently had a twenty-five year retrospective show at Alma College in Alma Michigan.

Many of Bill’s prints are available through the Art Rental program at the Flint Institute of Arts (810-234-1695)

WHAT'S NEW with Bill's Art

Things are pretty busy here in the studio!

NEW PRINTS

The Chariot
The Magician
I’ve been concentrating on the tarot card set. There are two more screenprinted cards to add to the collection: “The Chariot”, and “The Magician”. I am currently working on “The Hanged Man”, and hope to complete it very soon. These are the tenth and eleventh (and soon the twelfth) cards of the 22 card Major Arcana that I have completed.  Unframed prints from these editions are available for $150 each.

I have added an 11” by 15” reduction woodcut entitled “Grey Guardian” to my collection. Done in conjunction with the workshop conducted by Jean Gumpper at Mott Community College, the four remaining prints from this small edition are available for $200 each (unframed).

EXHIBITIONS

The International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) is still displaying the exhibition entitled “The Artist’s Universe” in the on-line virtual gallery in the 'Second Life' environment, in celebration of the International Year of Astronomy. My print 'Late Kingdom - XX Dynasty - Apollo XVII' is included in Gallery 5 of this exhibition.

Two of my prints, “The Magician” and “The Source” are included in the current Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) exhibition at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove Pa. The exhibition continues through October 11.

In conjunction with Oils by Bob Van Duyne, I will be showing all of my completed tarot cards plus several other prints at Fandangles Gallery at G-6429 W. Pierson road in Flint. The opening reception for this exhibition is from 1 – 3 pm on Sunday August 23rd and the show runs until September 7th.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

I will be attending GenCon (a national gaming convention) in Indianapolis Indiana from August 13th through August 16th. Thousands of Fantasy gamers (Dungeons and Dragons etc.) will convene on downtown Indianapolis. It turns out to be a natural place for my dragon portraits and posters. This will be my third year drawing and selling my artwork there. My 2009 dragon poster (pictured on the right) is completed, and will be shown for the first time at GenCon.

2009 Poster

This will be our 20th year at the Michigan Renaissance Festival (shop #146 – across from the flying dragons). The first weekend is August 22nd and 23rd and it runs through October 4th. I hope you stop by my shop and say hello.

I will be teaching a Printmaking class again at the Flint Institute of Arts this November. It will be a two day class (Thursday evening on two consecutive weeks), and will focus on reduction linoleum printing. Think of an idea for a 4” by 6” block you can cut, print, cut and print again. You can call the Institute (810-234-1695) for registration details.

Click here to see the full set of my other 17 posters. The posters from previous years are still available. I have separated them into three packs of 5 years per pack: ’92-’96, ’97-’01 & ’02-’06. The large 5-poster set is $50 while the small set is $45.  Individual posters are always available from my website for $10 or $12 plus postage.

In addition to my regular images, my dragon portraits, my dragon posters, the card sets, the sticky-back bookplates, and the 18” x 26” reproductions, we are now offering a coloring book with 20 Black and White dragon portrait line drawings ($10), and various sized ceramic tiles with any of my images on them. (e-mail me for more specifics and prices). Click here to see these new additional products we have available!

Well, that about covers it for now  ….   Bill
